How can I convince my parents to let me get my braces off?

off road pictures question by babycakes: How can I convince my parents to let me get my braces off?
When I got my braces on in May 2008, I was told I would only need to wear the for 18 months, tops. Now here I am, about to be a sophomore in high school, and my orthodontist is saying I should wear them for nine more months. He says the only thing wrong with my teeth is my bite, and if I don’t fix it now there is a small risk of impaired eating 20-30 years down the road.

I’m very insecure about my appearance because of braces. I hate going out, and I don’t smile in pictures. I hate the way I look because of braces. I’m 15, but I look like I’m 12 because of these dang braces! I can’t start school with them, I just can’t. My orthodontist says he’ll take them off if I really want to.

The only problem is my parents. They feel like I should keep them on until my teeth are perfect. I feel like they already look good, it’s just my bite. I’m all about living for today, and braces are negatively affecting my life. If I have problems with my teeth later, I’ll deal with it then. How can I convinve my parents that I have to get them off now?

Answer by H is for Hello
Oh calm down. Its just braces, I think youll be able to survive. Many, many kids have braces and they deal with it. Youll be able to get them off by the time you enter grade 11 and to be honest, I really doubt anyone else notices whether you have braces or not.

If its going to affect your eating down the road, then its important that you keep them on. You realize “dealing with it” when you end up having problems means youre going to have to have braces when youre 30 or 40 years old right? I think thats a little worse than having them when youre 15.

You should feel lucky that you have braces in the first place. There are tons of kids who are embarrassed of their teeth and wish they could get braces but their family cant afford it.

Has a classical piece ever induced any extremely vivid pictures or circumstances in your mind?

off road pictures question by Mina: Has a classical piece ever induced any extremely vivid pictures or circumstances in your mind?
Hello, everyone…

I was just browsing Youtube and came along a Scriabin Impromptu I hadn’t heard before. I closed my eyes and listened, and along came the most intense and distinct scenario in my head. I won’t go into all of the details, as I tend to babble on when it comes to describing things, but the main theme of this ‘vision’ was a girl in a black hood walking down a road. She was carrying flowers and had tears in her eyes, but was holding them back calmly. She turned, entered a cemetery, and walked towards a gravestone. Then, right at about 1:25 in the video where he breaks out into that distressful, building tone, the girl burst into tears as she read the name on the grave, and then sat there, crying, and remembering, for the rest of the piece.

Now, I know that this is probably not what Scriabin had in mind when writing this, but the whole scenario was so vivid! It’s odd – I do very often feel emotion in a piece, and sometimes get ideas and pictures floating into my head when I’m listening. But, such a distinct vision hasn’t really happened before! There is a link to the piece below, do you guys get any images when listening to it as well? What feeling does this piece evoke in you?

Scriabin – Impromptu Op. 12, No. 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XesrMXFGfeg

Even if you don’t feel emotion for this piece, has any other piece gotten a reaction from you like this piece did from me?

Also, do you think the vision was a direct induction from the piece, or simply the result of a wandering/daydreaming mind while listening to it? I’m leaning towards the latter, as I’ve been doing some creative writing lately, but I still just can’t get over how vivid this scenario was! Please share your thoughts and experiences, if you wish?

Take care,
Mina

** Note: I’ve searched and found the reason that my links appear unblue and unclickable – Yahoo doesn’t want people posting spam, so blue and clickable links are off-limits to those in the community who are a measly level one. -.- But, there is hope – either copy and paste the link into your search bar, or simply write the name of the piece and composer into Youtube. It should be found pretty easily!
Sorry for the inconvenience… but it’s worth it, even if you don’t want to answer the question! Scriabin is so incredible and intense, and this piece is practically candy for the ears!
Thanks everyone for answering! Unfortunately I still have to pack tonight, so I won’t be able to reply to everyone. I’m sorry if you didn’t get a response!

Joshua Haines: That’s really interesting… But I see how you can get that from the piece. Great answer!
Tanya968: I found the whole ‘brain connection’ idea and the medical aspect really interesting… I actually just read a medical book (can’t for the life of me remember the name) and there was this bit on synesthesia, or ‘connected senses.’ It said that indeed, sound can create and be ‘connected’ to images, and vise versa. The book stated that we’re all synesthetic to some degree, so maybe that explains the things you saw/heard? I have to read up more on that!
Alberich: That’s what makes classical music so beautiful – its connects to our emotions, with only sound, on a level that nothing else does. I think you’re right when you say I simply must have been daydreaming, sometimes I forget I’m still a teenager! As for my affinity with Scriabin, I think it might be a phase. Although I’ll always appreciate him, I am going through a ‘religious change’ period in my life and am fascinated at the religious influences in his work. I have been scanning the bookstores for a biography on him, but none seem to have any… I might have to order online. Ah well, it’s worth it for music icon biggrin Has a classical piece ever induced any extremely vivid pictures or circumstances in your mind? Thanks for your answer!

Hahaha… unclean. Well, you’ll have to put up for the dirtiness for a while, I’m afraid… I just started here! icon razz Has a classical piece ever induced any extremely vivid pictures or circumstances in your mind?
Your vision was so detailed… that’s pretty amazing! And the stamp thing made me smile. Thank you!
Petr B:
Even if you do feel as ‘the odd one out,’ I do kind of see where you’re coming from. The phrase that popped into my head was ‘A Pure Listener’ – someone who hears and sees only what is there… if that makes any sense? I’m not sure… my old teacher always said that I was like a messy eater mixing foods on their plate – I got my music in my art, and my art in my writing, and my writing in my music… I guess you’re more of a ‘neat eater’? icon smile Has a classical piece ever induced any extremely vivid pictures or circumstances in your mind? How would the US stop an invasion from China?

off road pictures question by : How would the US stop an invasion from China?
Picture this: Some years down the road, the supply of some vital resource gets so scarce that it causes global war. China lands in Alaska and marches down through Canada into the United States. We hold them off for a while but the end is inevitable. The entire western half of the US becomes occupied territory.

Eventually, the survivors in the west are trapped behind enemy lines. Those who headed for the hills in the beginning are using guerrilla warfare tactics on the occupying force. Basically only fighting small battles they know they can win and stying light and mobile.

That would make a pretty good movie or book, huh?

Buying a motorbike in the States is a little different than it is in Europe. They cost a few thousand dollars, and they arent as common place as a mode of transportation as they are in europe. May i strongly suggest going to motorcycle dealership page and see what you’re getting into. This is on top of flying for the US (could thousand dollars), Gas is almost $ 3.00 a gallon now. and Motels range from $ 50 to several hundred dollars anight, depending on what you want.

And why texas?? Most of texas is flat and dry (i was born there, i know!) Anyways… i say google it

off road pictures question by Quagmire: THIS CREEPY OLD MAN HAS PICTURES OF ME WHAT DO I DO?
This man is 43, and I am 20. He manipulted me and broke up my family because he was “romantic” and tried to be everything my boyfriend was not. He got really controlling, tried to get me pregnant ASAP and took my cell phone away and wouldn’t let me go on Facebook. He moved in with me and wouldn’t even let me go to the bathroom alone. He works from home so he would take me with him to an office once a week or so and the rest he spend watching my every move. One day over a month ago he went to his apartment to quickly grab something and I snuck out and ran down the road for help, and I never saw him again. He has very close up zoomed-in pictures of my face in a seperate album on his Facebook and refuses to take it off. He also has it on his desktop background and told me he looks at it all day every day. WHAT DO I DO??

Some guy just drove by my house and took pictures…?

off road pictures question by Joe: Some guy just drove by my house and took pictures…?
I am kind of freaked out by this, especially since I almost felt drawn to the window when I saw him. I heard the phone ring so I put down my guitar, went up, saw it was somebody I didn’t want to talk to (lol) and then just felt like looking out the window and seeing how the weather was. And as I did this, I noticed right next to my driveway this guy. I couldn’t get a decent view of him unfortunately, but I can definitely confirm that he was a middle-aged man (40s or 50s). He was driving a very nice looking new car – looked like a newer version of a Corolla. So anyways, he took pictures for a second and then drove away – he might have seen me and driven off. I am kind of scared right now. The one thing that REALLY bothers me, too, is that stopping to take pictures on my street is a very committed idea, simply because it is an extremely busy road and you have to have a lot of confidence to stop in the middle and start taking pictures. Also, the house is new. What should I do?

Is this towing company ripping me off?

off road pictures question by : Is this towing company ripping me off?
I recently went on a “business” trip that invovled going 126 miles out of town to take pictures of a foreclosed property. I was given the wrong direction by the person who hired me for the job and I soon found my truck burried a foot deep in drift sand from surrounding farms, five miles down an abandoned farm road. I called a towing company and they sent a wrecker out. he showed up about an hour later, and got himself stuck in the dirt also. I spent 3 hours shoveling dirt out from under his wrecker before he called for help. the company sent a second wrecker of the same size to help. this wrecker arrives an hour later and get stuck a quarter mile down the road.

Finally the towing company gets there wits about them and send out this truck they called the monster. it was an old military truck with wheels as taller than me. it shows up an 2 hour later takes an hour hauling the wrecker closest (less than half a mile) from the road out, then arrive at my location, load my truck on the other stuck wrecker, and use the moster to pull the wrecker out.

the whole ordeal took approx 10 hours, and alot of work on my part. I’m think that had a hired a different towing company that they would have know better than to get 1, let alone 2, wreckers stuck.

But regardless they charged me $ 600 ($ 300/hr for the monster) and when I didn’t have the funds to pay they dropped me off at a truck stop in the town where they were stationed 25 miles away (100 miles from my home) and told me good luck before they drove off with my truck still on the wrecker.
now they are charging me $ 35 a day for storage, and considering that I didn’t complete the job, therefore did not get paid, adding to the fact that I nolonger have a work vehicle, I won’t be able to pay to get it release for atleast a few months.

Is any of this worth contacting the BBB, or am I just being a sour puss?

any other useful advice would be appreciated.

off road pictures best answer:

Answer by Vipassana
“or am I just being a sour puss?”

Actually, you’re just being a poor consumer.

1. You didn’t get an estimate prior to the work.
2. Without having any idea what it would cost, you agreed to the work. Which means, you accepted ANY cost they charged you.
3. You are now complaining about the cost, even though you did absolutely nothing to figure out what it would be.
4. It ended up taking them 10 hours, and you think $ 600 is too much money?

I’ve had tows take less than 20 minutes, and cost me $ 150.

Oh, and yes…if you can’t pay for the services at the time of completion: they take your car.

Just like if you get a car fixed at a repair shop, and you can’t pay. No money = no goods.

Go ahead and contact the BBB……if anything, you’ll get sued by the towing company for libel. And they’ll win.

Help with Canadian road trip!?

off road pictures question by Jackieeecake: Help with Canadian road trip!?
My friends and I are going on an eastern Canadian road trip in early September. We only have 10-11 days to spend, so we are only going to be in each city for about a day, some will be allotted two. We will be heading to Toronto (1 day), Montreal (1 day), Tadoussac (2 days; 1 for kayaking, 1 to see the Fjord), Gaspesie National Park/Gaspe (2 days; 1 in the Gaspe area, the other toward Saint Anne-Des-Mots), then back down to Quebec City (2 days), Ottawa (1 day), Niagara Falls (1 day), and finally home.

Gaspesie was not originally in the trip plans until a couple days ago when I stumbled across some pictures and all the reviews have been really positive. We can only extend our trip one additional day, but I am thinking about taking a day off Toronto (we’d still visit, just have less time…the original plan was to visit Toronto for two days, now it is down to one with Gaspe in the picture) to be able to spend two days in the Gaspesie area. I know two days is still probably not nearly enough time, but I think it’ll be enough to do some hiking, see the Peninsula, the Marcel Gagnon sculptures, and maybe Perce Rock.

So, my question is: is it worth the extra 8 hours+ driving time to get to Gaspe?

Thanks for any help!

off road pictures best answer:

Answer by St N
Definitely as it seems hiking and scenery may be your thing. Might I suggest that you start and end your trip at Montreal? Toronto to Montreal by car is 4 hours, 3.5 if you don’t stop for anything (I emphasize, anything) and miss the radar traps. Ottawa and Niagara Falls will also be more than 2 days when you add in travel time. If you hit the Toronto area at the wrong time (rush hour) it can add 1 to 2 hours to the trip. I’m guessing that you are arriving by air. Have a good trip and bring lots of film or memory cards.
