off road parts question by Jordan: Road or Mountain Tires?
I’m building a bicycle for more daily street use, all from parts online. I’m trying to decide whether to have on or off-road tires. I think that road give in general smoother and more comfortable ride, and obviously make the bike a little lighter. However, I do go on “rides” in the mountains. What do you think I should use? Maybe some positives and negatives of each?

I’m trying to remember the name of the game. The airplane doesn’t actually take off (i think), you just ride it along a road/path. You try to avoid the pink coloured part of the road. Otehrwise, you destroy you plane.

Anyone remember the name?

off road parts question by pardeejr: How much is a good condition large 1999 GT Avalanche mountain bike worth?
Original parts, except for clips. High end Shimano parts. Optional Handlebar set; minimal wear and tear. Has not been off road since 2001.

old mtn bikes are usually worth about $ 100. The Avalanche was a high end model, if i remember correctly. If it is in very good condition, and has xt or xtr parts it may be worth as much as $ 200

off road parts question by Hammer: 60% on the dirt the rest road driving, 2007 jeeps V older models?
I’m looking for the right Jeep, use will be part time, the vehicle will be parked away from my home, I’ll explore Out in the National forrest and not likley have any other vehicle with me, which brings me to the rock crawler ( Rubicon) or the Sahara, new verses the older models, keeping myself out of trouble. Which would be the better vehicle and what is the difference between the two stability on and off road? I have driven both 07′s Rubicon & Sahara the Sahara was more comfortable/stable on the road than the Rubicon, I have driven jeeps several years ago (a decade or so) can some one point me in the better direction

off road parts question by Pinger: I sold my moped 50cc for parts along time ago and now..?
I sold my moped that I got as a gift a long time ago for parts as it was off the road for about 6 years. The log book was never in my name as I found out today. It turned out the buyer was driving the bike and has now abandoned it leaving the log book owner in trouble. He ofcourse directed the police to my door step. What can I do to fix this mess?

I take it you are in the UK. Was a SORN issued? My advice would be to contact the DVLA and ask them. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/UsefulContactsByCategory/MotoringContacts/DG_178033

My car skid off the road today and was stuck in snow. Did I do the right thing, etc?

Off Road Parts

off road parts question by the who: My car skid off the road today and was stuck in snow. Did I do the right thing, etc?
Unfortunately it took up to 2 hours to get help, it was a bad day with plenty of accidents. However, I had at least 10 cars pull over to see if i was okay, but I was really nervous about talking to any of them because heck, you really never know who it is you’re talking to.

Ironically 9/10 of them were dudes. I guess ladies aren’t too helpful? LOL not when it comes to cars im sure.

What scared me though is, aside from staying in my car, and answerig to cops, this one group of loud mexicans about 10 of them came by, started laughing at me, and the situation, I guess since it looked kinda stupid, young gay/bi white boy in distress with shiny new car all stuck and splattered with mud, but they were even coming IN My car uninvited, I mean..it was like…are u trying to help me, or play around with me and steal my car!?!?

I didn’t know what to do at that point, but luckilly I had the keys so I went inside of the car, locked it told the guy I’m getting help and started talking at my cellphone. At that instant, they just kinda went away, and one of the guys said I’ll call towing, or whatever.

I was thinking wow, maybe they did just try to help but they were being shady. Another two guys asked me if I had a jumper cable since they were down, then a few more came by to see if I was okay, they claimed they drove from the other part of the highway all the way over to mine to see if I was okay. Then we had cops try to get me business with local towers, and NOT AAA.

I felt like instead of helping me they were just trying to make business for those boys, and the people pulling off the side were just…I dunno. one person used me, the other ppl were just laughing. it was really weird and I really felt violated to a degree.

Like I should have just ignored them all. What does someone DO in that situation? I was freaked out enough especially it being in the middle of a huge intersection during rush hour and a blizzard lol.

Do people who usually pull over really want to help, for the most part, and was I just being paranoid?

Or can some people really be freaks?

What’s the right thing to do in that situation?

Also, why do people laugh at AAA or whatever? I thought having them just in case was always a good thing.

One guy was like, “YOU have AAA?!?” like shocked or whatever.

Im like uhhh.yeah?!?! I’m not aware that AAA is a disaster club of some sorts lol.

Answer by Nonono1
That does sound like a scary situation.
Definitely should have had the doors locked to begin with. If your car slides off the road and you can safely get away from the scene, you should. You don’t want to be around when another car slides off and strikes your car. If you cannot safely get to a safe place (road is isolated or on a busy interstate) you should stay in the car, seat belt on, with the doors locked, and call 911 and a tow truck/AAA.

As for the people stopping, I almost always stop and offer my cell phone (unless I see them on one). If the stranded person appears to be less capable of defending themselves from a criminal, I will wait in my car for help to arrive, when possible. If I am on duty, then of course I’ll wait, as red and blue flashing lights tend to keep people going slower and away from the scene icon wink My car skid off the road today and was stuck in snow. Did I do the right thing, etc? .

As for the risk to your life, there is a very real threat of people being mugged/raped/murdered on the side of the road. It’s not near as common as some crimes, such as theft, but it does happen, and it is very dangerous for the victim. I would recommend looking into this group: http://www.pinkpistols.org/ They can help you acquire the skills and tools that will free you from dependence on others for your safety. Frankly, you’re the new black person. Unfortunately your attackers will likely look like anyone else and won’t dress up in silly sheets for easy identification (Klan reference).

Anyhow, I hope this helps, and I’m glad you made it through your ordeal okay. Stay safe out there!

off road parts question by HeiglLee: A car skidded off the road and hit a low stone wall. Glass from the windscreen was found 4.0 m in front of the?
car windscreen in the field.

(i) If the height of the middle of the windscreen is 1.2 m, estimate the speed of the car as it hit the wall.

(ii) Why is this value likely to be lower than the actual velocity of the car when it had been on the road?

CAN ANY OF YOU CHECK FOR ME THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS?

The solution for (i) is
Using projectile motion, the vertical component consist of the following parameter:
u = 0, a = = 9.81 m/s, s = 1.2 m, find t
Using s = ut + 0.5 at^2
Using 1.2 = 0 + 0.5 (9.81) t^2
t = 0.49 sec

Using t from above and considering the horizontal motion of the projectile,
R = v t
v represents the velocity of the glass chip (which assuming it represents the velocity of the car),
4 = v (0.49)
v = 8.16 m/s

The solution for (ii) is

FIRST OPINION
A) Contributed by my students, OKR and LSH and partly myself (Group B)
(i) the question specifies that the RANGE = 4 m
(ii) comparing 2 systems:
- Air resistance experienced by the car (which is LOWER)
- Air resistance experienced by the glass chips (which is HIGHER)
(iii) R = v t, R is constant, therefore glass chip will take longer time to reach the same range of 4.0 m, since the velocity is lower due to air resistance.
(iv) This lower value of velocity compared to the higher velocity of the car is the solution to the above said question (ii)

SECOND OPINION
B) Contributed by myself
(i) The system is consisted of 3 things
P = front portion of the car
Q = crumple zone of the car
R = the windscreen
In the sequence of impact energy transmitting through P, Q, R (in this order),
(ii) the P part is traveling with say 15 m/s, but abruptly reduced to 0 m/s due to collision.
(iii) the Q part is the crumple zone experiencing the damage. It takes some amount of time before the impact is transmitted to the windscreen.
(iv) while this process occur, the velocity of the windscreen is reduced from 15 m/s to perhaps, 14m/s, 11 m/s, 10 m/s, 8.16 m/s.
(v) as the windscreen starts to break, the glass chip, due to inertia, refuse to stop it’s motion, continue to travel with the velocity of 8.16 m/s.
(vi) Conclusion, the velocity of the glass chip is less than the actual velocity of the car, so it can’t represent the velocity of the car accurately.

THIRD OPINION
C) Contributed by my senior lecturer in the institution that I’m in, Mr.Leong
“There’s a lost of energy during the impact and the glass chip will have lower velocity as energy is proportional with v power of 2.”

Are FIRST, SECOND, THIRD OPINION THE BEST SOLUTION FOR THE QUESTION?

off road parts best answer:

Answer by Patrick S
The key issue here is the loss of kinetic energy due to the deformation of the windshield (into pieces). Whenever you have deformation, you have a so called “nonconservative” energy loss into heat. Momentum is conserved, but sometimes energy goes into heat, which is a whole different ball game (see Thermodynamics). So the third opinion is the best.
